This page explains why SAP requires a Material Ledger Type to be assigned to a valuation area for consultants, architects, and anyone configuring stock valuation in S/4HANA. In short, assigning the ML Type tells SAP which currency logic applies to which plant. It matters because Material Ledger Types are global templates, and SAP will not assume which one a plant should use. Use it when a plant holds valuated stock, and avoid it only when the plant has no inventory at all.
</aside>
A Material Ledger Type on its own does nothing.
It is a blueprint without a building.
The ML Type defines how valuation should work, but SAP still needs to know where to apply it. That link is made at the valuation area level, usually the plant. Until that assignment exists, the plant has no valuation identity. SAP knows the rules exist, but it does not know which rules belong to which location.
This separation is deliberate. SAP keeps valuation logic reusable and explicit. Nothing is implied. Nothing is guessed.
A Material Ledger Type defines which currencies are used for valuation.
A valuation area is the organisational unit where stock value is tracked, usually the plant.
Assigning the ML Type to a valuation area tells SAP:
“For this plant, always value stock using this currency setup.”
In plain English: SAP will not value stock in a plant until you tell it which valuation rulebook applies there.
Every goods movement, price update, and cost calculation in a plant depends on this link. Because valuation happens at the plant level, SAP must know which ML Type governs that plant before it can activate Material Ledger or calculate any values.
As a result, this assignment becomes a hard prerequisite for Material Ledger activation. Without it, the plant remains valuation-neutral. Stock can exist logically, but it cannot be valued.
If the ML Type is not assigned, SAP blocks Material Ledger activation for the plant. No activation means no valuation. No valuation means no material creation, no goods movements, no MRP, and no financial postings tied to stock.
